Best Video Editing Software – Free & Opensource

Recently one of my friends asked me to recommend best video editing software which is free & opensource.   He is a novice in video editing and expects a simple free video editor for beginners in which he can add videos, images, and music tracks and produce a simple video that he can share with his friends.

I reviews many video editing software keeping him in mind.  I tried many of the freeware software which are proclaiming that they are free. But they provided only limited features and I  needed to buy the pro version to get the result that I wanted.

A wide range of online video editing software are available which all comes with different level of technology and leverage.

Finally, I was able to figure out some open-source software that can fulfill your needs as well as beginner friendly. You can modify any video or create a new video using this software. You could save money by using these software if you are beginner or novice user.  Please remember that you may need a professional video editing software if you want to use some advanced features in video editing.

Before we jump into the details of these software let’s know what is open-source software

What is open-source software?

Open source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify, and enhance.

The person created the software that has the source code and will have full control over it. It is commonly known as “proprietary” or “closed source” software. Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office are examples of proprietary software.

Open source software is different. Its authors make its source code available to others who would like to alter it or share it. The softwares mentioned here are good examples of open source softwares.

General Features of Video Editing Software:

Here are some general features of the video editing software that will help the users to do editing.

  • It allows users to upload video, image, and audio files.
  • It provides a tool for arranging, clipping and manipulating the videos.
  • It saves or exports the completed files in different video formats.

Now video editing is possible for everyone. It does not require any hands-on training instead one can just download the editing software and go with it with ease. I have shortlisted just 2 open source video editing software for someone who is a novice in video editing.
